Endless Night

A work in development exploring parties and the right to gather

This is a new performance in development aiming to reframe and recontextualize parties as important political spaces, where gathering purely for the purpose of being together in joy is illuminated as a subversive political act. We are combining techniques associated with live art, postdramatic theatre and dance to investigate the concept of ‘the party’ as both subject and form.

We're developing this piece in conversation with the political climate in the UK in which the government has been starving community social spaces of funding, leading to their closure as well as seeking to ban gathering for the purpose of political protesting.

This work in progress is informed by the history of LGBTQ+ Pride, the rave scene of the 1990s, and current political affairs, to examine ways in which we can develop an immersive performance ‘party’ space in which performers and audience gather as an act of resistance. By taking the familiar ‘party’ as a framework for exploring community building and the politics of gathering, we hope to give the audience a newfound perspective on partying and the role of joy in creating social change.
